Here's a look at Carnival-related events in addition to traditional Mardi Gras parades.

    The Krewe of Barkus wags its way through the French Quarter with Harry Pawter and the Sorcerer’s Bone on Sunday, January 30 at 2:00 P.M., with its Pawty in Armstrong Park running from 10:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.     Events in Kenner’s Rivertown include the following: the Mardi Gras Museum will present Mardi Gras Indian Chief Larry Bannock of the Golden Star Hunters as he constructs his 2005 costume during live demonstrations from Tuesday, January 18 through Monday, February 7. Children’s Castle holds its Queen and King Cake Ball on Saturday, February 5 at 11:30 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. Royalty will be selected and crowned from the costumed children in attendance with music, dance and king cake; reservations are recommended. Lundi Gras festivities along Williams Boulevard on Monday, February 7 begin at 10:00 A.M. and run through 1:30 P.M. honoring the monarchs of Argus and Zulu, the latter of which will receive a ceremonial send off to their downstream arrival in New Orleans later that day.     In Mandeville is a true novelty — the only Carnival parade to be held after Mardi Gras. The Krewe of Mardi Paws formerly held its parade on Lundi Gras until inclement weather pushed back the event to the following Sunday and their attendance doubled. This year’s registration begins at 9:30 A.M. on Sunday, February 13, with the parade along the Mandeville lakefront beginning at 11:00 A.M. (985) 892-0060 or www.MardiPaws.com.

    In Metairie is Lakeside Shopping Center which will have an exhibit on the Krewe of Zulu in its center court beginning Tuesday, January 18 and featuring costumes, throws and posters.     Beyond the flood wall on Jackson Square and next to the Cathedral is the Presbytere where an exhibit of the views of Mardi Gras are on permanent display. On the far end of the Quarter at the Old Mint on Saturday, January 22 from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M. will be a beading workshop with Darryl Montana of the Yellow Pocahontas tribe of Mardi Gras Indians. Sunday, February 5 from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. brings Music at the Mint where the Wild Magnolias host a retirement party and farewell performance for Bo Dollis, stepping down after 50 years of performing as a Mardi Gras Indian.     The satirical parade of the Krewe du Vieux wends its way through the Quarter on Saturday, January 22 at 7:00 P.M. under the theme What Would Krewe du Vieux Do? with Al “Carnival Time” Johnson presiding as king. (504) 586-1094 or www.kreweduvieux.org.

    O’Houlligan’s Ball, a revival of a late-19th century celebration by working-class Irish poking fun at popular society gatherings, takes place on Friday, January 21 at 8:00 P.M. at O’Flaherty’s Irish Pub. (504) 529-1317. Also in the French Quarter, the Krewe of Cork celebrates in wine and grape-related costumes at several locations from midday into the evening on Friday, January 28.     The Greasing of the Poles at the Royal Sonesta Hotel is held on Friday, February 4 at 10:00 A.M., a grandly staged petroleum jelly-laced precaution designed to deter overzealous revelers from shimmying up the balcony supports. (504) 586-0300 or www.royalsonestano.com.

    The Endymion Samedi Gras street party is held beginning at 11:30 A.M. on the neutral grounds or median of Orleans Avenue at City Park Avenue on Saturday, February 5. (504) 736-0160 or www.endymion.org.

    The historic Bultman Funeral Home is the site of a Bacchus Parade Party sponsored by Save Our Cemeteries on Sunday, February 6 from 4:30 to 9:00 P.M. Tickets include food, drink and a front porch view of the parade. (540) 525-3377 or www.saveourcemeteries.org.

    The Bourbon Street Awards is held at high noon on Fat Tuesday, February 8 outside the Oz Nightclub. This fabulous costume contest is definitely not a spectacle for the faint of heart or the young of age. (504) 593-9491.
